The grain trader Charles Jackson and Co Ltd believes that vertical integration in the soft wheat supply chain, linking farmer, trader and processor, is the way forward and has demonstrated this belief by announcing a Harvest 2013 contract for Torch for supply into UK breakfast cereal producers and flour millers.

Charles Jackson, Managing Director of Charles Jackson and Co Ltd., reports that samples of Torch have been provided to processors and that they are pleased with the quality and specifications of this variety, so much so that it is to be brought on one year earlier than normal.  “We aim to work closely with the major breakfast cereal producers as well as flour millers to make sure that they get what they want. Reciprocally we have found that these processors are very keen to work with us early in the field development phase to identify appropriate varieties and then to secure supplies. They have confirmed that the Group 3 variety Torch provides excellent quality and the right specifications for their needs. Many of them have said that, as a soft wheat, Torch processes better than many other varieties such as Claire. In our view close vertical integration, as this demonstrates, is the best way forward for all in the supply chain.”

Charles advises that Charles Jackson and Co Ltd is keen to contract for Torch for Harvest 2013.  “Torch is an exciting new variety: the highest yielding Group 3 on the NABIM and HGCA lists this season. It has the necessary quality criteria for the market, with excellent Hagbergs and bushel weight.

We have reserved a tonnage of seed for our growers for Autumn 2012 planting and will be taking Torch into store for purchasing for Harvest 2013 or purchasing throughout the season if stored separately on farm. High premiums, already trading £20 to £25/tonne for next year coupled with high yields should easily compensate for any extra spray costs to control yellow rust.”

With the imminent harvest, this will be a good test this new variety and other varieties to see how well they maintain their processing qualities, he says.

Based in the heart of cereal producing area in Northamptonshire, Charles Jackson Grain offers crop storage, processing and marketing for wheat as well as barley, oats, oilseed rape and Miscanthus and advice on trading markets.  “We trade all grades of wheat produced locally, dealing with both large and small producers.”
