HGCA recommended lists: 18 new varieties unveiled

HGCA announced this morning that eighteen new varieties have been added to its Recommended Lists for 2012/13.Full details will be available in the forthcoming full booklet, which will be published in early 2012.

Wheat

The new varieties include five new winter wheats: Crusoe, a nabim Group 1 variety,
Torch, a nabim Group 3 variety, Horatio, a soft-milling feed variety with distilling potential,
KWS Gator, a hard-milling feed variety and Relay, another hard-milling feed variety.

KWS Alderon, a new spring wheat variety has also been added to the list for spring and autumn sowing.

Barley

Three new winter barley varieties, two malting and one feed, have also been added: SY Venture and Archer are both high-yielding malting varieties with good resistance to lodging and the barley mosaic viruses and the six-row variety KWS Meridian has been added for the feed market.

The list comprises three new spring barley varieties: Odyssey, Chronicle and Overture. All three are high yielding and have good resistance to mildew and Rhynchosporium. The three are all currently under test for malt brewing and malt distilling

Oilseed Rape

New additions for winter oilseed rape varieties include three for the East/West region: DK Expower, a restored hybrid variety with a good yield and very good resistance to Phoma stem canker (9 rating), Thorin, a new restored hybrid semi dwarf variety and the open pollinated DK Camelot, which is shorter and earlier than other open pollinated varieties.

There are also three new additions for the North region - all restored hybrid varieties: Cracker, which has good resistance to the two main disease threats in the region; light leaf spot (9 rating) and clubroot, Palace, which has good resistance to light leaf spot and has a stiff stem, but is late maturing and Artoga, which has good resistance to light leaf spot and is earlier maturing.

Removals

Several varieties have been removed from the Recommended Lists. In total, seven winter wheat varieties have been removed from the list. There are: Cassius, Gladiator, Glasgow, Istabraq, Kingdom, Oakley and Robigus.

Forensic, Scout, Panther and Publican have been removed from the spring barley list. Boost has been removed from the winter barley list.

In oilseed rape, Excel, DK Secure and NK Bravour have been removed from the east/West region and Emerson, DK Secure, Hornet, NK Bravour and NK Grace have been removed from the North region.

Drummer and Leven have been removed from the spring oat list.
