LSPB is giving farmers a unique opportunity, through a dedicated website, to assess the 2011/12 trial crop performance of Avatar, its restored hybrid contender for the east/west region of the 2013/14 oilseed rape HGCA Recommended List.

The www.watchitgrow.co.uk site shows a UK map with the locations of each of the key farmers who are growing trial crops for the breeder. Each of those growers is to provide regular updates, independent of the breeder itself, as to how the crop is progressing through the season. In addition, the commentary will be supplemented by photos of the fields concerned, to illustrate the descriptions and show exactly how the crops are progressing.

Detail alongside each description includes data on drilling dates and seed rates, as well as establishment method, soil type and previous cropping history. All 15 growers involved in the trials are expected to provide reports and data right through to harvest, says LSPB.

Meanwhile, LSPB distributed this autumn, for evaluation through Frontier and H L Hutchinson, seed equivalent to 100 hectares (250 acres) of its Clearfield herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape Clifton CL this autumn. Currently in National List trials, Clifton CL is tolerant to BASF’s Cleranda (metazachlor + imazamox) herbicide, which has now received approval for use in the UK.
