Currently 6 Sugar Beet varieties on the BBRO recommended list come from SESVanderHave; part of the Florimond Desprez group. So the opening of a brand new pre-cleaning seed production unit in Calignac, France on 28 June 2011 is timely for the 2011 seed harvest.

“The new precleaning factory signals the significant ongoing investment in seed production and processing to continually deliver top quality seed.” Comments Elsoms’ Ian Munnery which represent SESVanderHave in the UK.

The purpose of the new factory is to pre-clean the seed crops “When the seeds from the production areas arrive at the factory, small sticks, stones, dried earth and foreign seeds need to be removed. Subsequently, seeds that are too small, hollow and seeds with inadequate germination are also screened and removed. The remaining seeds are then polished and sorted, before they are transported to the processing factory in Tienen, Belgium. “

SESVanderHave, where it has built up a network of 250 experienced seed multipliers, who produce quality sugar beet seed in the South-west of France. Calignac is right in the heart of the seed production zone and the topography of this valleyed region makes it easier to isolate crops from wind-blown contaminants.

SESVanderHave said the new factory will profit from some innovative new processes, which ensure it can deliver specific pre-cleaning, adapted to each separate batch of sugar beet seed. Aspokesperson said, “With a more efficient and better adapted cleaning process we can enhance performance reduces waste by over 50%, optimise logistics, and reduce our carbon footprint.”

The site in Calignac, with a large storage capacity, is modular and can – if necessary - be adapted to hold other species in the future. The pre-cleaning campaign starts in August and ends in October.
