UK farmers are being asked to share their thoughts on precision breeding to help inform new research.
Led by University of Warwick PhD researcher, Nadine Aschauer, the outcomes should help to inform policymakers on how to realistically support farmers in the transition to new seed technologies and reduced chemical sprays.
Nadine highlights that despite the use of fungicides, Septoria tritici still costs the UK wheat sector £110-220M every year. “As disease pressures increase and new technologies like Precision-Bred (PB) crops emerge, their real-world success depends entirely on whether farmers are willing to grow them,” she says.
Nadine’s work will also involve building a mathematical crop disease model that includes decision making. Therefore, she requires UK wheat farmers to complete the short survey to inform what financial, practical, and agronomic thresholds will impact the choice to grow PB seeds.
The survey is anonymous and takes approximately 10 minutes. Take the survey here: https://qualtricsxm87ndzpkfc.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bjDiFACeRL7qmKq
