Coined ‘the compact tractor for professionals’, Fendt recently launched its 500 Vario Gen4 series as part of a significant expansion across all power segments. CPM explores what makes the machine stand out for UK farms.
“Puts its power to the ground particularly gently.” FENDT

For years, the mantra when buying a new tractor was ‘bigger is better’. While in some situations stepping up a power bracket might still be the way to go, with the added benefit of impressing the neighbours, it appears more modest medium machines are starting to gain attention.
That’s because efficiency is the name of the game, whether operating a purely arable, mixed or grassland/livestock system. And with heightening geopolitical unrest rocketing the price of inputs – namely fuel – it’s time to ask, what can be achieved from less?
In rolls the Fendt 500 Vario Gen4, and at first glance, this tractor appears to have it all. Modestly sized yet boasting enough tech to keep all generations on the farm entertained, it’s efficient, convenient and future-proof. In fact according to Fendt, with the 500 Vario Gen4, operators are ready for anything that comes – for them, their farm and their next generation.
Furthermore – albeit this is lifted from the firm’s marketing material – the opening gambit for this tractor is twee yet undoubtedly compelling. “The 500 Vario Gen4 combines compact strength with intelligent technologies and accompanies the change with precision, comfort and vision. True innovation arises where experience meets fresh ideas and both are heading into the future together.”
So what does that actually mean in reality? First off, let’s look at the basics. The 500 Vario Gen4 series is available in four models (513, 514, 515 and 516), and sits ably in the medium performance segment.
Operating from 134-164hp, this is boosted further by Fendt’s DynamicPerformance (DP) feature, which releases an additional 10hp for all models if main and secondary consumers such as the PTO, fan, compressed air supply, or air-conditioning require more power. “This delivers more performance when it matters,” states national sales manager, Andy Davies.
Critically, the new 500 Vario isn’t just a couple of new bulbs and some invisible, minor tweaks within the depths of the hood, it’s been completely redeveloped. For example, it’s scored a 4-cylinder AGCO Power CORE50 engine, intelligent VarioDrive, and the aforementioned DP.
Andy adds that the entire vehicle concept is designed for high payload and drawbar capacity, and notably, it’s the first time that VarioDrive has been available for compact standard tractors within this power class.
For those unfamiliar, VarioDrive enables the front and rear axles to be driven independently to ensure torsion-free four-wheel drive. Torque distribution automatically shifts the torque to the axle with the best grip for optimum traction in any situation. Another advantage of VarioDrive is the ‘pull-in-turn’ effect whereby the independently-driven front axle actively pulls the machine into the corner without torsion.
For the operator, this means the 500 Vario achieves a particularly small turning circle (10.1m) with full tractive power – navigating entrances, narrow paths and headlands with breezy ease. Fendt says the machine remains manoeuvrable even with implements and in the trailer, making it ideal for front loader work.
Then, referring back to the Core50 engine, this is a lively and smooth number with added efficiency thanks to the Fendt iD low speed concept. Speaking of efficiency, the Core50 is approved for HVO100 and fuels, and if operated with HVO, the machine’s CO2 footprint can be significantly reduced.
Perhaps curiously, the 500 Vario has a high payload of 4.9t, which Fendt attributes to its low empty weight. It can be ballasted in the front, on the rear wheels and in the rear, both as a field tractor with a seed drill combination and as a front packer, as well as for use in grassland with a mowing combination, and for safety in transport.
The load of the adjustable drawbar or the K80 hitch in the carriage has been increased to 3t. With a permanently installed K80 hitch, up to 4t of drawbar load is possible for the first time with the 500 Vario.
Bearing in mind this is a machine with efficiency at the fore, the new 4-speed PTO meets the requirements of all available implements, boasts Fendt. Two economy PTOs work efficiently in the partial load range with fertiliser spreaders, tedders or sprayers to boost productivity and reduce fuel consumption. In addition, the series is designed for implements with a high hydraulic oil requirement such as push-off trailers, roll-belt trailers, pneumatic seed drills or potato harvesters.
Then, moving to the soil, Fendt VarioGrip (integrated tyre pressure regulation system), is another new option to the 500 Vario. Depending on conditions and payload, the appropriate tyre pressure can be set in the terminal. Fendt says this is a tractor that ‘puts its power to the ground particularly gently’.
Furthermore, thanks to its high ground clearance with maintenance tyres, the 500 Vario can apply plant protection or nutritional products with relative ease while avoiding crop damage.
Of course, due to compact standard tractors spending much time on the road or in transport, safety has become a key feature of the 500 Vario. Having the Fendt iD low-speed concept means this tractor offers 1300rpm at 40km/h and 1600rpm at 50km/h, additional braking safety via a wear-free, hydraulic auxiliary brake, the Trailer Brake Assistant (TBA) and the automatic parking brake.
And, because it’s built for heavy loads with a permissible overall weight of 11.75t, this means that mounted implements or trailers with a drawbar load of up to 4t are transported safely and legally.
While seemingly offering enough ‘gentle grunt’ to undertake a vast range of tasks from agricultural settings to local authority scenarios, what’s this tractor like to ride in? For one, the 500 Vario is equipped with a generous panoramic window, ideal for precise jobs with the front loader, even at overhead height.
Generally speaking, the cab has been designed for long periods of use with both safety and comfort at the fore. For arable use in particular, this can include an ex-changeable filter system to provide additional protection against dust and vapours associated with the application of plant protection products. There’s also an optional intelligent, reversible fan to assist in particularly dusty operating conditions.
Then tech-wise, the machine is equipped with FendtOne as standard, and can be ordered Apple CarPlay ready.
The Fendt 500 Vario series has been available to order since November, with the first machines appearing on farm in Q3 this year. With all it offers in its neat package, it’s perhaps unsurprising that it was named Tractor of the Year (TotY) 2026 in the ‘MidPower’ category at Agritechnica.
